Business Profile categories are classifications, not a list of keywords. The primary category tells Google and customers what the business fundamentally is. Additional categories should describe other real parts of the operation without stretching into occasional tasks.

CATEGORY 1

Describe the main business as specifically as possible

Start with the service that best represents the company’s main business model, revenue focus and customer expectation. Google recommends selecting a specific supported category from the list. A plumber should usually choose a plumbing category, while a company centered on HVAC repair and installation should choose the closest HVAC business category available in its region.

Complete the sentence “this business is a.” Do not choose categories that merely describe equipment, products or isolated tasks the business has. Categories are controlled by Google and can vary by country or change over time, so confirm options directly inside the profile.

Read Google’s current category management instructions before editing. A category change can trigger reverification.

CATEGORY 2

Make the choice from operations, not one competitor

Review revenue by service, job volume, team qualifications, website emphasis, real-world branding and the work the business wants to remain known for. Competitor categories can provide context, but copying the visible leader can be wrong when the business models differ.

  • What service produces the largest share of appropriate revenue?
  • What does the company consistently call itself offline?
  • What qualifications and equipment does the team maintain?
  • What would a customer expect after seeing the category?
  • Does the website substantively support that business type?

CATEGORY 3

Add only distinct, meaningful parts of the business

Additional categories can describe other genuine divisions of the same operation. Use the fewest categories required to represent the whole business. Do not add every category loosely connected to a service and do not use categories belonging to a nearby or separately operated business.

Examples depend on actual capability. A plumbing company that regularly installs and repairs water heaters may qualify for a related category if available and representative. An occasional one-off task is weaker justification. Record why each category is included and which service page supports it.

CATEGORY 4

Use trade examples as a decision aid, not a universal list

HVACChoose the category matching the core heating, cooling or mechanical business.
RoofingUse a roofing category when roof work is the primary operation.
ElectricalUse the category describing the licensed electrical business, not each installation type.

The same logic applies to plumbers, landscapers, cleaners, pest-control operators and general contractors. Category names and availability differ by market. Select from the live list rather than relying on an old downloadable list.

A general contractor should not automatically add every specialist trade category. If independently operated departments or separately eligible businesses exist, review Google’s department and profile guidelines before combining them.

CATEGORY 5

Support the category with accurate services and substantial pages

After selecting categories, complete the profile’s services and ensure the website clearly explains priority work. The category, services, page headings and project evidence should reinforce a truthful business identity without repeating exact keywords mechanically.

Do not add city names to the business name or choose unrelated categories to chase visibility. Google states that categories affect local ranking, but accuracy remains the controlling principle.

CATEGORY 6

Change categories with a reason, baseline and recovery plan

Before editing, record current categories, rankings, profile status and business evidence. Change the smallest necessary set, monitor verification prompts and keep a dated log. Do not combine category changes with name, address and major ownership changes unless the business genuinely changed.

Review results over a useful period and account for seasonality. If a category is inaccurate, remove it even when it appears to generate impressions. Misrepresentation creates customer confusion and policy risk.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions local businesses ask

How many additional categories should a home service business use?

Use only the fewest categories needed to describe meaningful parts of the business. Google allows additional categories, but the maximum is not a target.

Do categories affect local ranking?

Yes. Google states that categories can affect local ranking. They should still be chosen for accuracy rather than keyword coverage.

Can a custom category be created?

No. Select from the supported list shown in the profile. If the ideal category is unavailable, choose the closest accurate general category.
